About Whatley
Whatley is a small village located within the county of Somerset, and just under 3 miles from the market town of Frome. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book of the 11th century and is known throughout Somerset for being the home of the very successful and vast Whatley Quarry, which is amongst the biggest of its kind in Europe.
Currently owned and managed by Hansons, Whatley Quarry produces primarily Carboniferous limestone, which can be both light and dark grey in colour, and is in very plentiful supply here. A freight railway line runs to the quarry, connecting it to the Reading / Plymouth line, close to the Frome train station. In the past, Whatley Quarry has been the sight of various environmental protests and now runs a popular study centre, to educate local school children about its methods of extraction.
Attractions in Whatley include the beautiful Church of the Holy Trinity and the Manor Farmhouse Gatehouse, both of which are Grade 1 listed buildings. The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in the middle of the 19th century, while the Manor Farmhouse Gatehouse dates from the beginning of the 16th century
